An undated file photo shows a man skis. Beijing had its coldest morning in almost 40 years and its biggest snowfall since 1951. Britain is suffering through its longest cold snap since 1981. And freezing weather is gripping the Deep South, including Florida's orange groves and beaches. Whatever happened to global warming?

Such weather doesn't seem to fit with warnings from scientists that the Earth is warming because of greenhouse gases. But experts say the cold snap doesn't disprove global warming at all - it's just a blip in the long-term heating trend. 位于 wèi yú 美国 měi guó 科罗拉多州 kē luó lā duō zhōu ěr de 国家 guó jiā 大气 dà qì 研究中心 yán jiū zhōng xīn de shēn 科学家 kē xué jiā 杰拉 jié lā ěr ěr shuō :“ zhè (zhèi) shì 大自然 dà zì rán 变性的 biàn xìng de 一个 yí gè 表现 biǎo xiàn shuō zài 全球变暖 quán qiú biàn nuǎn de 同时 tóng shí 我们 wǒ men 仍然 réng rán huì 遭遇 zāo yù chuāng 纪录 jì lù de 低温 dī wēn 天气 tiān qì 只是 zhǐ shì 这样的 zhè yàng de 天气 tiān qì huì 减少 jiǎn shǎo

"It's part of natural variability," said Gerald Meehl, a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. With global warming, he said, "we'll still have record cold temperatures. We'll just have fewer of them."

Deke Arndt of the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C., noted that 2009 will rank among the 10 warmest years for Earth since 1880.

Scientists say man-made climate change does have the potential to cause more frequent and more severe weather extremes, such as heat waves, storms, floods, droughts and even cold spells. But experts did not connect the current frigid blast to climate change. 那么 nà me zhè (zhèi) 究竟 jiū jìng shì 什么 shén me 原因 yuán yīn ne

So what is going on? ē ēn shuō :“ 我们 wǒ men 看到 kàn dào de 只是 zhǐ shì 北极 běi jí 空气 kōng qì zài 北半球 běi bàn qiú 人口 rén kǒu 密集 mì jí 地区的 dì qū de 一次 yī cì 大爆发 dà bào fā 北极 běi jí 空气 kōng qì 真的 zhēn de xiàng 我们 wǒ men wēi le

"We basically have seen just a big outbreak of Arctic air" over populated areas of the Northern Hemisphere, Arndt said. "The Arctic air has really turned itself loose on us." zài

In the atmosphere, large rivers of air travel roughly west to east around the globe between the Arctic and the tropics. This air flow acts like a fence to keep Arctic air confined. 不过 bù guò 最近 zuì jìn zhè (zhèi) 气流 qì liú 明显 míng xiǎn chéng “Z” xíng zǒu shì 向南 xiàng nán běi 方向 fāng xiàng 蔓延 màn yán 如果 rú guǒ 居住的 jū zhù de 地区 dì qū yǒu nán shàng 气流 qì liú 经过 jīng guò 那么 nà me 天气 tiān qì jiāng 会变 huì biàn nuǎn 事实上 shì shí shàng 华盛顿州 huá shèng dùn zhōu 阿拉斯加州 ā lā sī jiā zhōu 上周 shàng zhōu de 温度 wēn dù dōu chuāng xià 历史 lì shǐ xīn gāo

But recently, this air flow has become bent into a pronounced zigzag pattern, meandering north and south. If you live in a place where it brings air up from the south, you get warm weather. In fact, record highs were reported this week in Washington state and Alaska. 然而 rán ér 其他 qí tā tài 幸运的 xìng yùn de 地区 dì qū 一样 yí yàng 美国东部 měi guó dōng bù zhèng 遭遇 zāo yù cóng 北方 běi fāng 呼啸 hū xiào ér xià de lěng 空气 kōng qì zhè (zhèi) 就是 jiù shì 为什么 wèi shén me 北京的 běi jīng de 气温 qì wēn huì zhì 3 duó 挪威 nuó wēi 大陆的 dà lù de 气温 qì wēn xiáng dào 零下 líng xià 42 duó 英国 yīng guó 部分地 bù fen dì huì yǒu hòu 18 英寸 yīng cùn de xuě 英国 yīng guó mǒu 议员 yì yuán shuō 大雪 dà xuě 表明 biǎo míng 气候 qì hòu yǒu 变冷 biàn lěng de 趋势 qū shì 结果 jié guǒ 遭到 zāo dào 同事的 tóng shì de 讥笑 jī xiào

But in the eastern United States, like some other unlucky parts of the globe, Arctic air is swooping down from the north. And that's how you get a temperature of 3 degrees in Beijing, a reading of minus-42 in mainland Norway, and 18 inches of snow in parts of Britain, where a member of Parliament who said the snow "clearly indicates a cooling trend" was jeered by colleagues. 国家 guó jiā 海洋 hǎi yáng 大气 dà qì 管理 guǎn lǐ 气候 qì hòu 预测 yù cè 中心的 zhōng xīn de 气象学 qì xiàng xué jiā 米歇尔 mǐ xiē ěr shuō 这种 zhè zhǒng “Z” xíng zǒu shì 不时 bù shí 出现 chū xiàn zhè (zhèi) hěn 自然 zì rán dàn 不清楚 bù qīng chu 为什么 wèi shén me 现在 xiàn zài huì 这么 zhè me 强劲 qiáng jìng gāi 中心 zhōng xīn shuō zhè (zhèi) zǒu shì 应该 yīng gāi huì zài liǎng zhōu hòu 开始 kāi shǐ 减弱 jiǎn ruò

The zigzag pattern arises naturally from time to time, but it is not clear why it's so strong right now, said Michelle L'Heureux, a meteorologist at the Climate Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The center says the pattern should begin to weaken in a week or two. 相关 xiāng guān 阅读 yuè dú
